Early Life
Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and grew up in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. An active and athletic child, Fox excelled in various sports, particularly basketball. His determination and perseverance were evident early on, as he overcame his relatively short stature to become a standout player on his high school basketball team.
Cancer Diagnosis
In 1977, at the age of 18, Fox was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, which led to the amputation of his right leg above the knee. Despite this life-changing event, Fox’s spirit remained unbroken. During his treatment, he was deeply moved by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of whom were children. Inspired to make a difference, he decided to embark on a remarkable journey to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.
The Marathon of Hope

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his “Marathon of Hope” in St. John’s, Newfoundland. His goal was to run across Canada, covering approximately 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles), to raise money for cancer research. Running an average of 42 kilometers (26 miles) a day, Fox’s determination and courage captivated the nation. Despite running with a prosthetic leg, he persevered through pain, fatigue, and various challenges.
Fox’s journey was marked by extraordinary support from Canadians who were inspired by his dedication and resilience. Along the way, he met with thousands of people, sharing his story and encouraging donations for cancer research. His message was simple but powerful: if everyone contributed even a small amount, significant progress could be made in the fight against cancer.
The Tragic End
Unfortunately, on September 1, 1980, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles), Fox was forced to stop his run just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario. His cancer had spread to his lungs, making it impossible for him to continue. He returned to British Columbia for treatment, but despite his valiant fight, Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981, at the age of 22.
Legacy

Terry Fox’s legacy endures through the annual Terry Fox Run, which was first held in 1981 and has since become a global event. The run has raised over $800 million for cancer research, continuing Fox’s mission and honoring his incredible bravery and determination. His story remains a powerful testament to the impact that one person’s courage and dedication can have on the world.
